Comments: My husband and I went on a trip with four horses to Indiana recently and we were looking for a nice place to layover and allow our horses some much needed rest for the night. We called a few places to stay and finally found Mike Murphy at the Double M M Arena & Stables. Mike was very friendly from the beginning. He was helpful and very polite on the phone to me. We then left for our trip we had planned 5 hours later than expected and realized that we would not be arriving at the Double M M until 3 or 4 AM! I called Mike and explained the situation, he was very understanding and said that was fine, I get up early anyway. We arrived at 4AM and here came Mike with a smile on his face greeting my husband and myself. He helped us get situated and showed us where everything was. They have a wonderful shower and a nice clean barn for our horses to stay in. We felt so welcome and so comfortable we fell asleep right away.
My husband and I highly recommend Mike's place to everybody!!!!

On both occasions we both had the Dungeness Crab and Provelone Cakes, which are served with a roasted red pepper and chive garlic cream. The crab cakes were also served for us with garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables. On the first night we started with the Dungeness Crab and Bay Shrimp Dip, which was wonderful, but we discovered that we needed to save room for the main course. The Crab and Provelone Cakes were "to die for" and there were three large cakes in each serving so the other items on the plate, as great as they were, received secondary treatment. The Silver Salmon also has an extensive wine list and service was highly professional. We are definitely returning here on our next trip to Astoria. Highly recommended!!

They suggested great places to eat in Astoria and the Hotel even provides transportation into town using two beautifully restored antique cars. Wine and appetizers were served at 5 PM and fresh-baked cookies were served for the guests returning to the Hotel later in the evening. My wife had a facial and massage at the Hotel that she rated as superb, and I used the well-equipped exercise room to try to work off all the wonderful food consumed during this vacation. The rooms were fantastic with breathtaking views of the Columbia River -- we enjoyed watching the big ships and fishing boats sail past our balcony and seeing the sea lions and flocks of birds fishing in the waters just off the Hotel. The picture was taken from our room balcony. We had a great time during our Oregon vacation, but the Cannery Pier Hotel is definitely a place we want to revisit. Most strongly recommended.

Comments: I had never roped before I attended Cowboy School and Bob King had me roping live cattle horseback within a few days. I also learned techniques for the proper use of the rope in a roundpen as a horse training tool. Everything we did was planned with the safety of the animals and students in mind. Bob's a great horseman and roper and a patient instructor who encourages his students to challenge themselves. The week at Cowboy School was a tremendous amount of fun, and I'm planning to return for another one soon.
