I visited again recently after the changeover to Dover Saddlery and was pleasantly surprised. Dealing with PPL was much better than trying to sell it ourselves and they were completely honest with us throughout the process. Comments: After a bad experience buying a quarter horse at an auction, a friend recommended that I look at the horses available at some of the old-time ranches with legendary ranch horse programs. He recommended the Haythorn Ranch as one of those to take a look at. I checked the Haythorn website and found several likely geldings listed and then I called for more information. Loriann, at the Haythorn, listened to my description of the horse I was looking for and then suggested that I come up to Nebraska to take a look at a 10 year old gelding they had for sale. It was easier, and less expensive than I thought to get there with a flight from Houston to Denver on Southwest and then a 3-4 hour drive to Ogallala, NE. I was at the ranch in the morning, talked to Loriann about the gelding, watched her ride him, rode him myself around the ring, and then she opened the gate and let me take him out for a ride across the ranch. We went through a herd of yearling horse, passed herds of cattle, rode by irrigation equipment, trotted and loped and the gelding did great. I decided to buy him and paid a fair price that was representative of what I had been seeing online for a horse of his experience and bloodlines. After the ride, I met Craig Haythorn and some of his crew for lunch before heading back to Denver.
I've got the gelding back in Texas now, and he is as good here as he was in Nebraska. He's well-trained, has lots of cow, is gentle, and has the best feet I've seen on a horse in a long time. My friend's advice was right on -- if you want a great ranch horse that's been raised and trained right, you'll do well to deal with a ranch that has a reputation for quality and fair dealing going back to the 1880s. The Haythorn is one such ranch, and it's the first place I'll look next time I'm in the market.

I had previously installed an air conditioner and a plywood floor, but was using an air mattress in the gooseneck for sleeping. It was barely tolerable. However in this limited space, Southwestern Conversions managed to accomplish an almost miraculous transformation of my trailer to make it very comfortable for overnight accommodations on the road. They insulated the compartment and added wall coverings, a shower, windows, new lights, a water heater, a water tank, and storage closets, and it was all done with a Texas theme. The craftsmanship was first-rate and the work was done at a very reasonable price. In a tour of the facility, I saw some of the larger trailers they've done, and they are much nicer than any production living quarters installation I've ever seen. Plus Southwestern Conversions manufactures its own line of trailers, which you can outfit to your particular requirements. The company is owned by a horseman who has spent a lot of time on the road hauling so he knows what works and what doesn't. If you want to update or install a living quarters in your existing trailer or your in the market for a new trailer with living quarters, you owe it to yourself to contact Southwestern Conversions. Comments: They are a wonderful ranch. From riding lessons to equine sales, to rich goat milk and soaps, to farm fresh produce these guys have it all. They are up front and very personable! Great small town home feel to their ranch. They have all kinds of livestock and just amazing. I go there for fresh eggs, smooth creamy goat milk (only $9 a gallon!), luxurious soaps, riding lessons and lamb.

Mark Krenek, the owner, did a very professional job in building the forms and pouring the foundations and I'm sure those foundations will last for many years. He and his crew also did a great job in building our Mueller storage building. It was up very quickly and Mark's high standards of workmanship were evident during the process. I recommend K&P Manufacturing very strongly.

The restaurant was just a few minutes away from the Ogallala interchange on I-80. My ribeye steak dinner was great and was the home-cooking that many places advertise, but few places can deliver on. While I was waiting for my meal, I enjoyed the many Western paintings and photographs that decorate the restaurant. Service was friendly and attentive. I also had a steak dinner at a chain restaurant the next day in Denver and it was no where near as good as the dinner at the Front Street Steakhouse.

Comments: My wife and I ordered a 4-stall shedrow Barnmaster barn with a feed room and tack from Tri-County Barns, and we are extremely pleased with the result. Due to an extended period of rainy weather, it took us longer than anticipated to move the dirt to prepare the pad site for the barn. Keith Thaemar, the General Manager, was flexible in rescheduling the barn delivery and construction. He sent his Project Manager to the site several times to check that the forms were laid out properly before we poured concrete and to oversee the crew constructing the barn. The crew did a great job of working through more rain and mud to complete the barn and they also did a great job of cleaning the site when they finished. The end result is a very high-quality barn that complements our property and will be a safe, comfortable home for our horses. Tri-County Barns has our strongest recommendation for building great barns!

Comments: I had a 2007 Toyota Camry that was totalled in an accident on January 21, 2008. I tried the dealer in Houston where I had bought the car in May 2007 and they said it would be 2 months before they could get me a car equipped like I wanted. Cowboy Toyota found a car that fit my specifications within 24 hours and had it ready to be picked up in 4 days. The irritating thing about this is they got the car from a Spring, Texas dealer! I don't understand why the Houston dealer couldn't (or wouldn't try to) do that. Lawrence Curry was the person I dealt with. He was very professional and had every detail covered. Their pricing was very competitive with the Houston dealer. I will strongly consider Cowboy Toyota the next time I am looking for another Toyota - even though it is 290 miles away.

We had stopped at a local place to buy shrimp and asked them for a recommendation for a good place to have some seafood -- and they were right in recommending River Bend Tavern. We had shrimp Po-Boys and oysters along with fries and onion rings. I'm a big fan of a good shrimp Po-Boy and these were great. Lots of tender, flavorful shrimp in a good roll, and our friends said the oysters were wonderful too. Service was good and the prices were very reasonable. I'm looking forward to our next trip to Matagorda, and the River Bend Tavern will definitely be on the agenda.
